What’s the deal with infant sleep positioners? Necessary? Safe?

I know they’re cheap, but is it worth the investment?

Are they just supposed to keep the baby on their back?

Clearly as a first time mom I admittedly don’t know much, but it just seems like a SIDS risk to me.
