How many hours should an 11 week old baby sleep for in the night?

Shelli asked:

My baby is 11 weeks old today and we put him to bed at about 10pm when we go to bed and he wakes at 1am and 5am and doesnt normally go back to sleep until 10am for about an hour unless we take him out in the pram he sleeps longer, is this a normal sleeping pattern or should we try and get him into a routine and put him to bed earlier?

My son is the same age and usually goes to sleep around 11 and then sleeps till 5 and then is up till around 7 and then back to bed till 10 or so. Every baby is different though. We co-sleep with my son but have been putting him in his crib at night to try it. He will only be still in there for about an hour before he really starts to fuss. Its hard at this age to get them into a routine but its never too early to start.

It just depends really. I think they’re supposed to have around 15 hours sleep per 24 hour period. My son takes 12 hours overnight and had a few daytime naps. Some babies will need less than this though.

What’s his temperment like? That sounds like he needs a bit more sleep to me, but the best indicator is how he acts. Is he frequently fussy, rubbing his eyes and ears? He might be sleepy.

I’d do a couple things — first, try and move the bedtime a bit earlier. And then give him a couple of naps during the day. Babies that young frequently need a nap after being awake for only about 2 hours.

Of course, all babies are different, and even the same baby will go through different periods — some where they need more sleep than others. I’d pay attention to the signs that your son is sending you that tell you he’s tired and put him down then and see what schedule emerges.

My daughter just turned 11 weeks yesterday and she will usually go to bed around 10 or 11. She will then wake up around 4 or 5 am to eat and then back to sleep until 9. Just In the last week she has been sleeping through the night, until around 8, but not every night. I think it all really depends with each baby,

my 14week old will go to sleep between 8pm and 11pm – sometimes wake up at 3am for feed, but sometimes sleep thought until 6/7am – she’ll then normally have a 1-2hr nap then from like 8am-10am and then is up all day..sometimes will have hour nap in the afternoon but most of the time shes wide awake during the day now. babies sleep patterns are so different – if they need to sleep they will sleep, if they don they wont lol :)
