When will my baby sleep through the night? How do I get him to?

Logan’s Mommy asked:

My son is going to be three months old tomorrow and he still doesnt sleep through the night. He goes to sleep around 6:30pm and gets up at 12am, 4am, and 7am. Ive tried waking him up and feeing him before I go to sleep but he always gets up at the same time as if he has a clock built in his brain! Ive heard that your baby should be sleeping through the night by 3 months old. What should I do? Should I put cereal in his bottle?

Not all babies sleep thru the night at 3 months. My baby started sleping thru the night at 13 months. Its only been a few weeks since it started, and still she doesnt sleep all the way thru every night. Just most nights

Dont put cereal in his bottle, ask your doc if it is time and if so use a a spoon. My son woke like this for a while, he began to sleep through at 4 months then at 6 months stopped because of teething.

My baby is 5 months and I’m still having trouble with his sleep pattern, he won’t sleep until after midnight no matter what I do, he’s always been a night owl.
There is no set time, just because you have been told by your midwife or read it in a book does not mean it will happen to your baby, all babies are different. They will eventually start to sleep through when they are ready, but I wouldn’t put cereal in his bottle.

It doesn’t go for all babies, some just wake until their 1 or even older. If he sleeps your one of the lucky ones. I have a 5 1/2 month old and he sleeps by 9 pm wakes either at 1am or 3 am to eat and then sleeps until 7am. so I am here with you but I am glad he isn’t at that stage anymore!! wait for him to get older he should sleep longer.

My daughter is 9 months tomorrow and she still wakes every 2.5 hours for a breast feed. I understand totally your frustration. I was told shell grow out of it once she starts eating more, but alas im still waiting

My daughter is also three months old. She’s been sleeping through the night since about 5 weeks old. I HIGHLY recommend the book called: On Becoming Baby Wise

I’m a new mother and this book has been a huge help in the sleep department! I have a friend and her son is 14 months old and she’s still getting up 5x a night with him. Ugh. I cant even imagine how awful that would be.

Anyway, the jist is this….make sure you and you baby have a routine. The book mentions this pattern to help you get your child on a schedule. Feed your child and THEN allow for playtime. Followed by a nap. Don’t feed your child to put him to sleep. This will help you establish good Feed/Wake/Sleep habits.
