how old are babies when they start soothing themselves to sleep?

infant sleep
tina m asked:

When should I start laying my infant to sleep in the crib to fall asleep by his self? If he wakes up 20 – 30 min after I put him down do I let him cry himself to sleep or should I see if he wants to do something else, like be in his bouncer or swing?

Ok you will get varried opinions .. this is what I do with my 3 month old and what I have done with my other kids

I put him to sleep while he is SOMEWHAT awake..

it’s important for them to be able to fall asleep by themselves.

I put him in his crib and if he starts fussing..I let him Fuss for about 5-7 min I then go in and PAT his back and sing a little..

When he calms down I leave..If he starts fussing again..I wait a LITTLE bit longer this time 7-8 min..

I go in ..say HUSSHH..sing a bit but DONT pick them up..I just let him know I am there
When he calms I walk out and Listen

if he starts in again I usually wait 10 min.. and NORMALY if he’s sleepy at the 10 min point he drifts off to sleep.

If not I just KEEP doing it up till he drifts off to sleep

    good luck!

P.s. my little one is 3 months old.. I have been doing it SINCE he was 2 months old
