How old was your infant when you allowed him/her to sleep on their tummy?

Mommy to Ava; Born 11-05-2008 asked:

My daughter will be 4 months on the 5th of March and she has started to roll from back to front. But now she keeps rolling in her crib. Do you think it’s okay to let her sleep that way, or should I continue to turn her back over?

The Doctor told me to “train” my 4 month old on the rolling bit since she was 2 and a half months old (of course she just started rolling, but putting her on her tummy since that age helped her not to hate the position) but she told me not to let her sleep on her tummy till she was older, so I am still putting her to sleep between a set of pyramids on her right side for a while and then on her left side.

Let her sleep the way she wants..My son was about that age when he started rolling over..You can’t really stop her from rolling now without increasing the risk of sids(ie rolled blankets and stuff like that)..If she can roll both ways then let her be…My son will be 2 next month and still prefers to sleep on his tummy…If you see her facing the crib mattress then yes move her head to the side or turn her over..but if she is nice and comfy let her be!!!!

i started letting my little boy sleep on his tummy when i could no longer keep him on his back. i used to put him to bed on his back, and within minutes he would be on his tummy. i would roll him back over, but it did no good. so i started leaving him on his tummy. that’s the way he seemed comfortable and he refused to sleep any other way so i just started letting him. i think he was about 4 months. he’s 13 months now and he’s just fine. so when you can no longer keep her on her back then i would say that she’s fine to sleep that way

My son has been sleeping and rolling over onto his tummy since before 4 months of age. I tried everything without risking SIDS to keep over on his back and it didnt work. But now he can fully set up,hold his whole upper body up and etc so I dont have to worry as much.

I have 9 month old triplets… they didn’t master rolling over till after 5 months of age… when they mastered that .. one of them started rolling over in her crib all the time.. I couldn’t keep her on her back… she would get fussy and woke up the other two when I switched her.. so I just let her start sleeping on her belly..

I think that is a fine time to let them.. when they can go back and forth on their own..

Can she roll from from front to back? Lift her body up ??

I would have probably rolled mine back over if she couldn’t go from front to back… but if she is fussy.. then let her be.. if not.. it can’t hurt…

Best wishes with your little one..

My pediatrician said that its okay to let the baby sleep on her tummy if she knows how to roll back and forth. Personally…I allowed my daughter to sleep on her tummy ever since she was a newborn. I know some moms might be strongly against that…but I felt comfortable with it…not to mention I checked up on her every 30 mins through the night…or so it felt like it. Anyway…the reason I did that was because my daughter would get scared or be jumpy in her sleep and her hands would fly into the air as if something jumped out at her in her dreams. She would wake up from that and start screaming….and I figured it was bad for her heart being jumpy all the time…..soooo…sleeping on her tummy gave her more comfort and security. She’s 10 mths now…and she sleeps on her side back…upside down..ahah however she likes.

my 4 month old has been sleeping on his belly for over 2 months now. When I try to lay him on his back, his eyelids fly open faster then you can say goodnight! I also found he didn’t turn his head when he spit up while on his back, and always ended up gagging on his drool and stuff. Sleeping on his tummy is the only way mommy gets any amount of sleep. Don’t let everyone freak you out about SIDS… there’s a risks of SIDS with almost everything baby does! Just make sure the crib has nothing other than blankets in it, and maybe try tucking them in securely?
