Is it ok to let an infant sleep in a baby swing or carseat?

caffine_loady asked:

My son really seems to sleep better in his swing and carseat than he does in his bassinet. We’re just worried that there might be something wrong with his sleeping in them. Even more so, would there be anything wrong with sleeping in either overnight?

I’ve heard that you shouldn’t have infants sleep with you, and they should only sleep on their back, but that’s all I’ve heard.

Occasionally it’s OK. But if it happens all of the time your baby could develop a flat head. We let my daughter sleep in her car seat for most of her naps during the first couple of months. One side of her head ended up flat from lying against the hard surface. It was easy enough to correct-We just had to make sure she was always in her crib, and while she was sleeping we would move her head to the non-flat side.

it is truth they should always sleep in their backs.. but it is safe for them to sleep in a swing and a carseat because they feel warm and cozy how squishy they are.. and in the swing its safe also because they think your rocking them..

For naps it is fine, for night make sure they are in the crib. You are right, don’t let them sleep with you. You will see many questions on here about 5 year olds still sleeping with the parents and the parents freaking out because the kid won’t sleep alone. Don’t get yourself into that.

Let him sleep where he is most comfortable. If my kids fell asleep in the swing or carseat I left them there until they woke up. If he is safe and has the belt on, I don’t think there is anything wrong with it. More rest for the both of you is always good! Good luck!

don’t leave him asleep in the carseat if it is still in the car!
If it is in the house it is ok, you dont need to wake him and move him. i would not leave him there overnight though.
There is nothing wrong with having your baby sleep with you, as long as you do it safely and make sure his head is up higher than yours so it doesnt go under the covers! My daughter used to sleep best if she was in bed with me (now i sleep best when she is in her own bed, as she is a wriggler, but still enjoy bringing her in with me in the wee hours of the morning)

It’s not recommended, mostly because in a carseat and swing, baby’s head will fall forward and/or too much to the side. This can close off the windpipe and your baby could have trouble breathing. And always buckle him in! Please be careful.

Once in a while is all right…but the answerer who said they can get a flat head is right. My brother let my nephew sleep in the carrier/ car seat all the time and had him there most of the day and the back of his head is flat…he’s 6 now and it still looks weird.

My daughter sleeps in her bouncer all the time. I’ve discussed it with the doc and shes says to let the baby sleep wherever she’ll sleep. She’s 3 months old and she is just starting to sleep in her cradle
