Laying infant on his or her back to sleep?
mattfromasia asked:
Last I heard, it was still recommended to not lay an infant on his or her stomach to sleep because of SIDS. Is that still the general consensus and recommendation in the medical community? Does anyone have any documentation to show that’s the recommendation? We’re discussing it online in another forum and I’d like more to go on than just what I heard several years ago.

Yes, back continues to be best.
ETA – here is another link that states the number of deaths attributed to SIDS has dropped 50% after the 1994- Back is Best Campaign was started by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP):
I have heard it is wrong both ways depending on what I am reading. I know from personal experience though that laying them on their backs can be just as deadly. My co-worker’s daughter and hubby had an 8 month old that they would put to sleep on her back. She spit up in her sleep one night and could not turn herself over yet and so she choked to death. They found her the next morning when they woke up.
I, personally put my daughter down on her stomach when she was an infant and never had any problems. In fact, if I put her down on her back, she would cry until I flipped her over. She started turning herself over when she was 6 months old because she just hated to be on her back. She is 3 now and still prefers to sleep on her stomach.
You’ve got it right. They recommend that you ALWAYS put an infant on their back to sleep, to reduce the risk of SIDS.
It’s the big “Back to Sleep” campaign. When a baby can roll over on their own, you don’t have to go in every hour and turn them back over onto their back, but until then, it’s always on their back.
Edit: Sorry, I misread. I’ve corrected my mistake.
Yes. babies should ALWAYS sleep on their back. Every doctor apt I go to my doctor asks if I am sleeping my son on his back, its very important
My 2 month old always sleeps on her belly, but they do say they should sleep on their back. If my daughter is laid on her back she is awake and screaming every 15 minutes and how is that any way to live? We also have an AngelCare motion detector in her crib, so if for some reason she would stop breathing it sounds an alarm to wake us up.
