Should I let infant sleep or wake her up to feed her?

Valerie asked:

I’ve heard several people do both– some people let their babies sleep until they wake up to be fed saying that the baby will let you know when they are hungry. Other people say to wake them up to feed them… opinions?
she is 2 weeks and 1 day old

Let her sleep, she’ll wake up when she’s hungry.

I let mine sleep until he woke up. I did it once, woke him and feed him and found he really didn’t eat much and was up again in about hour and 1/2 hungry. So I just let him tell me when he was hungry after that

Let it sleep until it wakes to eat. Trust me, the baby will let you know. But go ahead and prepare at the start of the baby stirring… the quicker you are, the less fit you have from the little one

Let the baby sleep they will wake up when they are hungry. You need rest too so if the baby wants to sleep let them and sleep yourself. Also when they sleep more than they eat this normally signifies a growth spurt and this is important to their development.

Let them sleep. People say to wake them up to feed when they are on some crazy schedule plan. But babies do best when they are fed on demand. They will let you know when they are hungry.

I think the nurses go a bit overboard with the whole making sure they eat every 3 hours thing. In my opinion, unless the baby is preemie or has some other issue where it doesn’t know it’s hungry let ‘em sleep.

let her sleep or else you’ll teach her to be hungry at a certain time.

Let her sleep as long as she is peeing regularly and growing well. Babies have built in sensors that tell them when they are hungry and if they are not hungry trying to feed them anyway is overfeeding. Also, it is very difficult to change the time of day when they sleep most. Enjoy the peace and get some rest for yourself.

I nursed. The nurse at the hospital was SO MEAN to me, she practically threatened me with death if I didn’t wake my baby up every 3 hours to nurse. I felt this was mean. If my baby needed to sleep then thats what I wanted her to do. The three hour schedule was stupid. I let my daughter tell me when she was hungry. She put herself on a schedule and it worked great for us. She would go to bed at 8pm, wake up at 1am, then sleep until 8am again. She did this until she slept through the night around 5 months. Do what works for you. If you formula feed, you might have it a little different.

If she is gaining weight let her sleep.

I agree that the nurses get over zealous on the whole feeding every so many hours. Wonder how many woke their own kids.

And if you are thinking you baby is sleeping a lot they do at this age! Go sleep and recover yourself because it wont last!

I personally would let her wake up and then feed her. The only person who knows if she is hungry or not is her. You dont want to feed her if she is not hungry at all and have her end up getting sick.
