What’s the deal with infant sleep positioners? Necessary? Safe?

infant sleep
Joel’s Mommy! asked:

I know they’re cheap, but is it worth the investment?

Are they just supposed to keep the baby on their back?

Clearly as a first time mom I admittedly don’t know much, but it just seems like a SIDS risk to me.

Can someone give me the sleep positioner 411?

I never used one. Rolled up blankets worked just the same. It is actually used to prevent SIDS, to keep babies in the safe for sleep position of being on their backs.

My son had a difficult time napping on his own for the first few months. He would sleep great at night, but during the day as soon as we laid him down he would wake up. At first it was fun to sit and cuddle with him while he slept, but after a few months and a messy house, we had to do some thing! I think the sleep positioner helped him fell like he was still be cuddled.

Had my son not gone thru that phases of not napping on his own, I would not have seen the need for one. So, I would say it is not a total necessity.

As for safety, Sleep positioners should only be used before a baby can roll over.

Hi….i bought what is called a tea tree bed (like a sleep positioner) my child loves it…i decide to wash it the other day which means she has just been in the crib every morning she wakes up vertical in the bed she is a squirmier. I don’t believe babies should always be on there back (they end up with flat heads) i believe they should be rotated a newborn cannot move so just roll up a towel and place one behind and in front if you are worried. SIDS is a big thing but isn’t as common as they make it out to be.

Good luck. You will do fine

I have never used them. I also would roll up a blanket if needed. There are too many products out there to confuse and break the wallets of parents!

Sleep positioners are not necessary at all! You could use rolled up blankets and they would work the same. Once a baby starts rolling it is useless and will not keep a baby on their back and just becomes a waste of money.

My personal opinion is that they are totally unnecessary. When you lay your baby to sleep on his back the only way he’s going to be in any other position is if he moves/rolls over. If he’s strong enough and old enough to roll over then it’s safe for him to sleep in whatever position he chooses. If a baby can move around and you have the positioner in place you’re putting something in the way of your baby and putting them at risk for getting stuck on it, suffocating, etc. The safest thing for a baby is an empty crib. No bumper pad, no positioner, no fluffy blankets or toys. Keep it simple.

Q: Should sleeping “wedges” be used for infants?

A: The American Academy of Pediatrics has stated that devices designed to maintain sleep position are not recommended since they have not been sufficiently tested for their safety and none have been shown to be effective at reducing the risk of SIDS.

My cousin lost her son to SIDS a few years before I had my oldest, so I got one of the baby wedges as soon as I got pregnant. They work to keep the baby on their back to help prevent SIDS. But… my daughter always wiggled when she slept and the wedges were misplaced every time.

I ended up putting a small cloth beanbag, like this one: , in the bassinette to keep her cradled, comfy and sleeping on her back. All my kids loved the beanbag. I think because it made them feel like they’re being held.

not needed, not advised, not safe ; usually ineffective if you have a wiggler anyway :O)
